Online Workshop: Developing and Executing a Long-Term Project

April 5th & 6th: 9am - 5pm EST

This two-day workshop is designed for journalists, storytellers, and photographers interested in crafting impactful long-term projects. Whether you’re just starting or refining an existing idea, this hands-on series will guide you through every stage of the process.

Day I: Laying the Foundation

Explore the first steps of building a long-term project. This session will cover:

  • Access: Navigating barriers to connect with sources and communities.

  • Ideation: Generating and shaping project ideas into compelling narratives.

  • Funding: Securing grants, sponsorships, and partnerships to bring your vision to life.

  • Pitching: Creating pitches that grab the attention of editors and stakeholders.

  • Investigative and Collaborative Approaches: Leveraging research and partnerships to deepen your storytelling.


Day II: Bringing Your Project to Life

Learn how to shape, showcase, and sustain your project. Topics include:

  • Editing: Refining your work for clarity, accuracy, and emotional resonance.

  • Getting Your Work Seen: Strategies to distribute your story across platforms.

  • Editor and Source Relationships: Building trust and maintaining clear communication.

  • Ethics: Ensuring informed consent and upholding ethical integrity throughout the process.


Join us for an engaging workshop that combines practical tools with real-world insights, helping you build a project that resonates and drives change.

Fee: $300

If you have financial constraints, please contact us, and we can explore a payment plan or possible scholarship opportunity. Ongoing mentorship after the completion of this workshop is available as needed.

About Annie & Sara Hylton 

Annie Hylton is an award-winning investigative journalist and magazine writer from Canada, recognized for her long-form narrative storytelling. Through her work, she aims to foster empathy and illuminate the human stakes behind major policy debates. Her writing covers a range of topics, including gender, migration, human rights, and conflict. She has reported from regions such as the Middle East, Central America, and Africa, contributing to leading publications like The New Yorker, Harper’s, The New Republic, London Review of Books, Esquire UK, and The Walrus.

A recipient of a Canadian National Magazine Award, Annie teaches investigative journalism at Sciences Po Paris and is trained as an international lawyer. She holds a J.D. and a Master of Laws in international humanitarian law and human rights, and she graduated from Columbia University's Stabile Center for Investigative Journalism. Based in Paris, she is represented by the Stuart Krichevsky Literary Agency.

Sara Hylton is an award-winning Canadian freelance photographer, renowned for her compassionate and intimate approach to documenting environmental and human rights issues. A graduate of the International Center of Photography, she holds an MA in International Conflict Studies from King’s College London.

Her work focuses on gender, Indigenous rights, and the environment, and has appeared in outlets such as National Geographic, TIME Magazine, and The New York Times. Sara is a National Geographic Explorer and has received prestigious grants from the Magnum Foundation, the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, and the International Women’s Media Foundation, among others.

A recipient of a National Magazine Award, Sara is also a faculty member at the International Center of Photography and an instructor with National Geographic Society’s Photo Camp. Based in Brooklyn, New York, she is represented by Redux Pictures.
